Puerto Escondido is a beautiful city of Oaxaca, known for its incredible beaches and ecotourism activities.
It is located on the Mexican Pacific coast and offers a great variety of activities, gastronomic places, and attractions.
Furthermore, in Puerto Escondido there are several beaches considered jewels to be discovered, so it is considered the ideal place to travel or live if you are looking for a space full of peace and harmony.
1. Location
Puerto Escondido is located in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec, about 800 km southeast of Mexico City and 290 km from the capital of Oaxaca de Juarez, on the Pacific coast.
To move this beautiful city there are several transportation options, which can be by air or land.
2. Flights to Puerto Escondido
In Mexico, there are three main airports that have flights to Puerto Escondido, in Mexico City (Benito Juarez International Airport), in Guadalajara (Guadalajara Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport) and Oaxaca City (Oaxaca International Airport).
Some national airlines that handle these flights are Volaris, Aeroméxico, Aeromar, and Viva Aerobus, with several price options.
Flight time is short, from Mexico City one hour and a half, from Guadalajara one hour and forty minutes, and from Oaxaca approximately forty-five minutes.
If you are traveling from the United States, Canada, or any other international destination, the easiest option is to travel first to Mexico City and then to Puerto Escondido (there are some connecting flights where both destinations can be included).
From the United States, you can use the service of airlines such as Dynamic Airways, Interjet, JetBlue, Frontier Airlines, Viva Aerobus, Aeromar, among others.
If you are traveling from Canada, some options are Book Air Canada, Aeromexico, and United Airlines.
There are also “charters”, which are the rental of private airplanes to travel whenever you wish. From Mexico, this service is offered by companies such as Viva Aerobus (Viva Charters) or Aeromexico.
In the United States and Canada, there are companies such as Chapman Freeborn, Bitlux Travel, Private Jet Charter, Novajet, and others.
3. Airport
Puerto Escondido has its own airport, “El Aeropuerto Internacional de Puerto Escondido PXM” located just 2 km away (and 4 km north of downtown, near Playa Bacocho), so when you decide to travel, it will be very easy to get to your destination.
4. How to get there by car?
Traveling by car may be an option, although you should know that the travel time from Mexico City is approximately 12 hours.
There are 4 routes you can take:
Route 1 : Mexico City/Puebla/Oaxaca/Oaxaca/Sola de Vega/Puerto Escondido
Route 2: Mexico City/Puebla/Oaxaca/Pochutla/Puerto Escondido.
Route 3: Mexico/Puebla/Oaxaca/Salina Cruz/Huatulco/Puerto Escondido.
Route 4 : Mexico City/Cuernavaca/Chilpancingo/Acapulco/Pinotepa Nacional/Puerto Escondido
One of the most recommended roads to travel is highway 175 via Pochutla (route 2), because it is the safest, with an estimated time of 7 hours.
It is also possible to travel by bus, because it is an economical option, although the travel time may be longer than by car, for example, if coming from Mexico City, the estimated time is 12 to 14 hours.
Finally, renting a car can be an option if you are in Oaxaca and want to go to Puerto Escondido, with a travel time of 6 hours or if you are coming from abroad we recommend you to rent a car directly in Puerto Escondido.
5. Traveling from Oaxaca city to Puerto Escondido
Exist a possibility that you are in Oaxaca and you are looking for the best way to travel to Puerto Escondido and there are the following options:
By plane
The best-known airline with direct flights from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is Aerotucan, with a transfer time of 40 minutes.
By car
The trip is made by the Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway, with an estimated time of 7 hours. From Oaxaca, it is also possible to rent a car and visit some of the highland towns.
The new Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway is currently under construction, which will considerably reduce the trip to only 2 hours.
6. Security in the area
You are probably wondering if traveling to Puerto Escondido is safe, the reality is that the issue of safety is something subjective in most of the world and Mexico is no exception.
In the case of Puerto Escondido, it is a small city, with a considerable influx of tourism at certain times of the year and, precisely because of its size, it can be considered a safe area, due to the fact that its inhabitants know each other.
The areas considered the safest are Zicatela, La Punta de Zicatela, Rinconada and Bacocho.
7. Currency exchange
For currency exchange there are some banks and exchange houses located in the center of Puerto Escondido (which also have ATMs), so you don’t have to worry if you are traveling from abroad.
8. Internet Access
Internet access is easy, because hotels, cafes, stores, and public spaces have this service available.
9. Beaches

Puerto Escondido’s climate is generally tropical (warm temperatures) in the year, with a rainy season from May to October.
